Professional Development Certificate

abstract colors background

The DGIM Professional Development Certificate Program aims to help junior faculty develop authentic and impactful careers in GIM. Specifically, we reinforce faculty skills in their areas of strength and interest, support progress in areas of growth, and proactively support promotion with an eye toward the new area of “additional contributions” in the FTCF promotion criteria.

Program overview

  • Find the “missing piece” for an authentic and impactful career!
  • Develop areas of strength and interest
  • Progress in areas of growth and work toward promotion

For many junior faculty, particularly full-time clinical faculty (FTCF), it can be challenging to develop an academic career. The UW Medicine FTCF promotion criteria add an additional layer of complexity by requiring at least some participation in an “additional contribution” alongside clinical care, professionalism, and teaching.

This professional development series (10 Fridays, 12PM, on Zoom) is structured as a Certificate in order to integrate mentorship, encourage discussion and community among the certificate cohort, include completion of a career enhancement project, encourage regular attendance of sessions, and recognize participation in professional development by awarding a Certificate that can be noted in the participant’s CV. Content areas are organized around teaching, scholarship, leadership, and growth—topics covered in 20232024 will include mentorship, menteeship, running a meeting, writing an abstract, leading a team, optimizing teaching, and more.

requirements

  • Participants must attend a minimum of 5 live sessions and view any missed sessions online.
  • Participants will complete a mentored career enhancement project. (Examples: teaching portfolio, abstract submission, workshop proposal, quality improvement proposal, manuscript submission)
  • Registration is required.
