Application Procedure
The University of Washington OEM program accepts applications exclusively through ERAS. For positions beginning July 1, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis between September 27 and December 1 of the previous year.
We request applicants submit four (4) letters of recommendation, including one from your most recent program director. No additional information is requested other than what is submitted through ERAS.
OEM core faculty screen applications. Candidates whose qualifications appear to be a good match for our program will receive an email invitation to schedule a day for interviews with Dr. Debbie Cherry, Program Director, and other faculty within the OEM program. Interviews for positions beginning July 2025 will all be held via videoconference without exception.
Applicants who will pursue an MPH degree do NOT need to apply separately to the School of Public Health (SPH) during the residency application period. If a position offer is accepted, the program will facilitate an expedited SPH application process.

Program Prerequisites
Physicians who have undergone a minimum of one year of postgraduate training in an ACGME, AOA, or Canadian accredited program are eligible for consideration for our training program. Completing a categorical residency program such as Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Preventive Medicine, or other specialty strengthens the application. We welcome applicants with military experience, such as completion of an intern year followed by several years as a flight surgeon.
Foreign Medical Graduates
Foreign graduates are welcome to apply to the program. All foreign medical graduates must have passed the USMLE examination, hold a valid ECFMG certificate, have completed at least one year of accredited training in another specialty, and be eligible for a WA limited or full physician license. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide stipends or funding support to trainees who are not US citizens or residents. Proof of permanent US residency status or US citizenship is required to receive funding.
