Clinical Experiences
Fellows will participate in:
- 4 weeks as ward attending on the inpatient teaching services at the University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake or optional teaching service at Harborview Medical Center.
- 25 nights as a teaching nighttime hospitalist.
- 5 weeks on direct care general medicine services at UWMC – Montlake, with opportunities to oversee and teach fourth-year students on their advanced inpatient sub-internship.
Medical Education Training
Fellows will join a community of similar early-career scholars in the Teaching Scholars Program. This year-long program prepares scholars to become academic leaders, conduct research related to educational endeavors, and disseminate educational innovations.
Fellows will also attend workshops offered by the Center for Leadership and Innovation in Medical Education and the DGIM Faculty Development Program.
Mentorship
Fellows will meet weekly with the fellowship director and additional mentors as applicable to their academic projects.
The fellowship director will work with the fellow to create an individualized development plan and aid the fellow in selecting additional training or projects to help achieve individualized goals.
The fellowship director will also facilitate networking with key faculty, such as clinician-educator exemplars and scholars who can engage the fellow in their research or provide additional career guidance.
Quality Improvement and Patient Safety
Fellows have the opportunity to enroll in the Certificate Program for Patient Safety and Quality Improvement run by the UW Medicine Center for Scholarship in Patient Safety and Care Quality. In this year-long program, hospitalists will receive formal training on quality improvement methods, patient safety, and change management. In addition, they will work with a project team on a mentored quality improvement project in their clinical environment.
Potential Additional Opportunities
Pediatric to adult transitions
- Fellows with an interest in pediatric to adult transitions for medically complex patients may arrange experiences in the Pediatric to Adult Transition Care Program. This will require coordination with the director of the Pediatric to Adult Transition Care Program and approval from the fellowship director.
Procedures
- Fellows interested in procedures and procedural education may arrange experiences on the procedures service at the VA Hospital. This will require coordination with the director of the procedures service, approval from the fellowship director, and fulfilling any needful credentialing issues.
Medically complex patients
- Fellows with an interest in the care of medically complex patients who have transitioned from homelessness to permanent supportive housing may arrange experiences with a hospitalist who also works as a Complex Care Manager (CCM) at Plymouth First Hill and The Estelle.
These are two buildings where the CCM-hospitalist does clinical outreach, including care coordination for all tenants and primary care home visits for a subset of tenants. This will require coordination with the CCM-hospitalist and approval from the fellowship director.
