Harborview Medical Center offers clinical experiences in opioid use disorder for UW medical students during their fourth year of training. Students spend most of their time on the interprofessional HMC Addiction Consult Service, but also rotate at a syringe service program, opioid treatment program, mutual support groups, and an office-based opioid treatment program.
Elective Courses Offered at VA Puget Sound
Medical Student Elective
CONJ 680 P-Detoxification and Rehabilitation Program for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse: Fourth-year medical students have an opportunity to gain clinical experience in treatment alcohol and substance use disorders at the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System. They will rotate through various clinical sites including sub-specialty and primary care treatment programs.
Resident Electives
VA Addiction Medicine Elective (4 weeks): This rotation is designed for all residents who are interested in improving their ability to diagnose and treat substance use disorders as well as explore a career in Addiction Medicine.
VA Homeless Healthcare Elective (4 weeks): Residents have the opportunity to care for a large population of veterans with substance use disorders and have opportunities to do low-barrier addiction care on this rotation.
VA Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education Internal Medicine Residency Program: Through this pathway residents have the ability to do “elective rotations” in both homeless healthcare and primary care addiction medicine.
