Mission, Vision, and Values

The Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Washington is comprised of more than four hundred faculty and staff across five hospitals in the University of Washington (UW) Health System: University of Washington Medical Center (Montlake and Northwest campuses), Harborview Medical Center, the Veterans Administration Puget Sound, and the Veterans Administration Boise.

We have adopted this statement of mission, vision, and values after a long process of listening and reflection among GIM staff, physicians, and—crucially—members of the communities where we live and work.

Mission

Our mission is to be a diverse and thriving division at the forefront of equitable healthcare. Through inclusive education, groundbreaking research, compassionate care, and public advocacy, we support all people in attaining their highest level of health and well-being.

Vision

We envision a world where health is possible for all.

Our vision is highly aspirational. It extends beyond our Division to the greater community at large.

Values

Equity

Equity is the foundation of creating a healthy community. We center the margins in partnership with patients and communities.

Accountability

We hold ourselves and each other accountable to person-centered, holistic, and compassionate care of our patients and our communities that takes into account social and structural drivers of health.

Curiosity

We are committed to continuous learning, exploring different perspectives, and approaching differences with curiosity.

Courage

We have the courage to take risks, stand up for what’s right, be bold, learn new ways of doing and being, and challenge the status quo.

Service

Through service, we share our knowledge, skills, and talents with our patients, colleagues, learners, and community for the benefit of the greater good.

Community

We work actively to build a supportive community within GIM through active listening and engagement, mutual learning, respectful dialogue, and support. We extend outward to engage collaboratively, with community partners to address health inequities.
