What is the Medicine Consult Service?
The doctors on the Medicine Consult Service team at University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake (UWMC – Montlake) are specialists in internal medicine, a branch of medicine that deals with the health of the internal organs such as the liver, heart, lungs, and stomach. This team of doctors helps prepare patients who are scheduled to have surgery at UWMC – Montlake. Most patients who work with the Medicine Consult Service have been referred by their surgeon for an appointment.
What can I expect at my visit?
We will do a complete medical evaluation. This includes talking with you about your current and past medical history, and giving you a physical exam.
We may ask you to bring records from your other health care providers.
We may also recommend you have other exams to help get you ready for surgery. These may include blood tests, heart studies, or imaging.
How do I get the results?
Your consulting team at the Medicine Consult Service will talk with you, your surgeon, and your primary health care provider about our findings and what we recommend for you. If you are scheduled for surgery, your consulting team will visit you in the hospital after your surgery to provide other recommendations as needed.
Will the Medicine Consult Service be in charge of my care?
After your consult with the Medicine Consult Service, your surgeon will still be your primary contact at UWMC – Montlake. If you have questions about your surgery, please ask your surgery team.
Your primary care provider is still your main contact for evaluating and treating your health concerns.
How do I prepare for my consult?
When you come for your Medicine Consult Service visit, please bring:
- A complete and current list of all medicines you are taking. Include the doses of each, and how often you take them (Please also bring the medicine bottles if you can.)
- The names and phone numbers of your other health care providers (see the form that is attached to this handout)
- Your results from any cardiac tests, such as stress tests, EKGs, echocardiograms, or cardiac catheterizations
- Any other recent test results, such as blood work and lung tests
- A list of your questions

Driving Directions
From Interstate 5
- Take Exit #168B (Bellevue /Kirkland) onto State Route 520.
- Take the first exit off SR520 to Montlake Boulevard N.E.
- Turn left onto Montlake Blvd. and continue north.
- Cross the drawbridge and turn left onto N.E. Pacific Street at the traffic light.
- For the Triangle Parking Garage, move to the right-hand lane, and turn right at the second "Patient Parking" directional sign onto N.E. Pacific Place, then immediately turn right into the Triangle Parking Garage, connected to the medical center via a pedestrian tunnel.
- For the Surgery Pavilion Parking Garage, stay in the left lane, and turn left at the Emergency Entrance, bear left and head downward under the sky bridge. The garage will be on your left.
From the east via State Route 520 westbound
- Take the Montlake Boulevard exit.
- Continue north on Montlake Blvd. and cross the drawbridge.
- At the traffic light, turn left onto N.E. Pacific Street.

Finding the medicine consult clinic
From the Main Entrance
Enter through the double doors, turn left at the information desk.
Proceed straight past the gift shop, elevators, and espresso stand.
Walk across the sky bridge and turn right.
Go past the spiral staircase into the clinic reception area.
Check-in for the Medicine Consult Clinic is at the last desk on the left.
From the Surgery Pavilion
Take the elevator to the 3rd floor and turn left after exiting the elevator to enter the clinics.
Check in for the Medicine Consult Clinic is at the last desk on the left.
