research
Dr. Lemaitre’s primary research area is the molecular epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, including heart failure, atrial fibrillation and sudden cardiac arrest, and type 2 diabetes. She is particularly interested in the relationship of circulating lipidomics species and other metabolites to the development of CVD in populations of different ethnicities, and diabetes and its cardiovascular complications in American Indians. Dr. Lemaitre’s research is typically conducted in the setting of NHLBI cohorts, for example MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) and the Strong Heart Study (a cohort of American Indians). Metabolite-disease associations are complemented by research on nutritional and lifestyle factors related to metabolite levels and the integration of metabolite data with other “omics” data (such as genetics and epigenetics) for mendelian randomization approaches and pathway investigations. This population-level biology approach involves many collaborators and genetic association studies are conducted within large consortia, such as the CHARGE (Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology) Consortium.
