Research Interests: I have a career interest in improving critical care and outcomes for emergency conditions through rigorous evaluation. I am trained in clinical medicine and epidemiology and have a strong focus in improving resuscitation from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. I collaborate with multidisciplinary clinicians and researchers to undertake observational and interventional research.
Investigations typically leverage a longstanding and robust registry that evaluates every person treated for cardiac arrest in King County. We also investigate other acute emergency medical conditions such as traumatic hemorrhagic shock and best practices for prehospital advanced airway management.
Opportunities for fellows: We engage in research with a broad range of faculty, fellows, residents, and students. Research roles can involve the spectrum from idea generation through to publication and presentation, understanding that the goal is to learn new investigative practices and develop research skills. Typically, an initial meeting can determine whether a research interest can be addressed and supported by the infrastructure.
Mentoring philosophy: I enjoy the scientific process involved in research, especially when that experience is shared. Fellows (and others relatively new to research) bring novel perspectives that challenge convention, motivate interesting questions, and sometimes discover compelling results. We work hard to support investigative creativity and research responsibility. Our group currently works with junior faculty, fellows, and residents from across surgical, medicine, and emergency medicine fields.
