After nearly 36 years of service, Dr. Stephan Fihn retired from his leadership role of Director of the Office of Analytics and Business Intelligence at VA Puget Sound at the end of January.

From 1993 to 2011, Dr. Fihn directed the Northwest VA Health Services Research & Development Center of Excellence at VA Puget Sound Health Care System. His research addressed a broad range of topics related to strategies for improving the efficiency and quality of primary medical care and understanding the epidemiology of common medical problems. He received the Department of Veteran Affairs Undersecretary’s Award for Outstanding Contributions in Health Services Research in 2002. He served as Acting Chief Research and Development Officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2004–5. In addition, at VAPSHCS, Dr. Fihn has served as clinic director, HSR&D Center of Excellence director, acting Chief of Staff. In the VA Central Office, he serves as Chief Quality and Performance Officer, Director of Analytics and Business Intelligence, and Director of Clinical System Development and Evaluation. Dr. Fihn has always striven to apply the principles and findings of health services research to health care delivery.

Dr. Fihn is active in several academic organizations including the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), the American College of Physicians, and the American Heart Association. In 2006, Dr. Fihn received the Elnora M. Rhodes Service Award from SGIM. The Award symbolizes the highest level of service to the Society and is given to an individual for outstanding service to SGIM and its mission of promoting patient care, research, education and community service in primary care internal medicine. In 2012, he received the Robert J. Glaser Award for outstanding contributions to research, education, or both in generalism in medicine from SGIM.

Dr. Fihn will continue to serve as Head of GIM at the UW, a position he has held since 1996. Additionally, he has been named Deputy Editor of a new, open-access journal, JAMA Network Open. Dr. Fihn maintains a weekly patient clinic at VA Puget Sound, a clinic he has held since 1982.
