Newly established in 2020, the Medical Student Addiction Research (MedStAR) Program educates and trains medical students between their first and second year of medical school to conduct a mentored research project regarding substance use disorders. As Addiction Medicine is one of the newest medical specialties, the goal of MedStAR is to encourage a new generation of soon-to-be medical providers to consider specializing in Addiction Medicine research and care delivery.  This program facilitates longitudinal research and clinical mentorship as well as opportunities to conduct and disseminate research findings by attending national conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed medical journals.
