Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in GIM

As a division within The Department of Medicine at the University of Washington, GIM is wholeheartedly committed to efforts that improve diversity, equity, and inclusion. These efforts include reducing inequities within our increasingly diverse patient population and the healthcare workforce who cares for them. We pledge to reducing disparities in health outcomes through equity in care delivery, scholarship, and medical education within UW Medicine. With a focus on inclusion, we will continue to increase the recruitment, retention, and advancement of faculty, staff, and learners from groups under-represented in medicine. We are dedicated to serving the needs of our patients, learners, partners, and community.

Fostering a Diverse and Inclusive Health Workforce

UW Health Professions Academy

GIM faculty member Dr. Naomi Shike helps to lead the physician shadowing component of the UW Health Professions Academy, a comprehensive professional development program for UW undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds who are aspiring to become physicians and dentists.

Visiting Scholars in Hospital Medicine

The Visiting Scholars Program is a funded program designed to give medical students from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to experience the training at the UW during a 4-week away rotation on a GIM service. The Hospital Medicine groups offers rotation blocks to VSP students interested in general internal medicine and hospital-based medicine.

Resident and Student Mentorship

In his work as a residency Assistant Program Director and Assistant Clerkship Director for Medicine, Dr. Dan Cabrera provides mentorship to internal medicine residents and medical students interested in internal medicine.

System Leadership

Leo Morales, MD, PhD, professor in the division of GIM, serves UW Medicine as the Chief Diversity officer and the Director of the Center for Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

 

Faculty Scholarship and Education in Health Equity 

Gender Bias in Medical Training

Drs. Shobha Stack and Jennifer Best are scholars and leaders in promoting the advancement of a more equitable environment for women in medical training. Their work has been funded by UW CLIME, the American Medical Association, and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.

Health Equity in Palliative Care

Dr. Rashmi Sharma is a clinician-investigator in GIM with a research focus on identifying and addressing inequities in care for patients with serious illness and their family members. She has a particular interest in evaluating the role of racial/ethnic, gender, and language barriers to communication and decision making about goals of care with the aim of developing patient and family-centered communication-based interventions to improve care. 

Training in Improving Health Equity

Professor Leo Morales is among a group of leaders creating a new health equity training pathway with the popular Certificate Program in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, which is co-directed by Dr. Andrew White. Matriculants will receive additional training in health equity and work on a year-long project to reduce healthcare disparities.
